Will the Apple Tablet Be Unveilled in January?

Steve Jobs is getting ready to part the red sea of gadgets again in 2010.

Here’s a final Christmas gift from Neonpunch to make sure you don’t spend all that “lai see” money you get from unimaginative gift-buying relatives tomorrow. The internet rumour mill has been in full swing while Hong Kong has been sleeping, and it seems that Apple’s unveiling of a “MacTablet” is looking likely for January 2010.

Big time news sources in the U.S. are declaring it’s coming in January so you can choose to believe them or not, but to us it seems like the perfect time for this to happen. The news is  that developers are working on apps and the unveiling will happen in January but will go on sale in the middle of the year - an exact mirror of what happened with the iPhone launch in 2007.

While we are Apple zombies ourselves, we still question the practicality of such a device; which therefore makes us question if it’s actually a tablet or a bigger iPod instead of a netbook. Apple is all about user experience, the typical HK$4000 netbook is a negative user experience – people are trading in portability for their eyesight.

The lowest end Macbook is under HK$8,000 and the iPhone is under HK$6,000, so where will a “tablet” sit in terms of price point for Apple? Will it simply be a bigger iPod with apps, videos and possible magazine, comic book and newspaper content; or will it phase out the entry-level MacBook by having similar guts but more portability? Are you even ready to dump keyboards for touchscreens?

That said, of course we’ll be first in line to get one!

One thing we know, Steve Jobs will stun us: either with something no-one can guess or maybe even nothing at all (remember September?) We just thought we’d bring this to your attention in case you were still scurrying around buying gifts when what you, us, them, that guy over there really, really want…could be a few weeks away.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Motorola has finally launched its first Android phone in Asia and guess where the first place to get it is? That’s right, Hong Kong! The new Motorola Milestone (known as the Droid in the U.S.) is the latest Android powered device in the world that features a QWERTY slider with 3.7” multi-touch & pinch display, oh yes, pinch display!

The Milestone is a blend of form and function that offers the thinnest QWERTY slider on the market (13.7mm) and a hi-resolution, multi-touch and pinch display with twice the pixels of the leading competitor.

Remember we did a poll a while back on how many Neonpunch readers would be willing to buy the Milestone once it hit Hong Kong? It was obvious that Hong Kong gadget fans wanted it, and so your prayers have been answered just in time for the New Year!

Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

Both Freeman and Eastwood have each received Golden Globe nominations for this film, with early buzz leaning towards the former winning big for his portrayal of  Mandela, so you’ll want to make sure you are one of the first to catch this movie in Hong Kong.
