The NDP Group released this information the other day showcasing the Top 5 selling consumer Smartphones in the United States:

  1. RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
  2. Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
  3. RIM BlackBerry Storm
  4. RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
  5. T-Mobile G1

Take into note that Verizon, an operator in the States, had an agressive “Buy 1Blackberry get one free” promotion helping Blackberry take over the lead from Apple. Read the full report here.

Smartphones, which represented just 17 percent of handset sales volume in Q1 2008, now make up 23 percent of sales. “Even in this challenging economy, consumers are migrating toward Web-capable handsets and their supporting data plans to access more information and entertainment on the go.” Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at The NPD Group said.

Surprising to us is that the Android G1 made it onto the list at #5, how will this list change if Apple allows for non-locked sales of the iPhone, and then where the Palm Pre will place and then how other Android smartphones will attack this list by the end of the year. We’ll let you know.

  1. It’s funny how in such a short time the landscape can change from leader to nearly unheard of! In the span of 2 years Apple went to number one and Android phones (none offered by BlackBerry) made it to number 2. Now as of this writing Samsung is topping iPhone in phones shipped…and Android has the larger market share. Mind numbing…
