Sales of Blu-ray discs rose to US$407 million so far this year.

It must be the lower price of Blu-ray players and everyone switching to HD TV’s because it isn’t because of bigger Playstation 3 sales. Nearly 20 million discs have shipped in Q2 alone, says Electronic House:

Blu-ray hardware sales surpassed two million units in the first half, marking nearly 25 percent growth over the same period from 2008. According to DEG, there are nearly 11 million Blu-ray devices in homes in the U.S., including PlayStation 3 consoles. Nearly 75 percent of those units are BD-Live compatible.

Putting that in to perspective is that 5 million DVD players were sold in Q2 of 2009 as well, brining the number of DVD players since it came to market in 2007 to 260 million in the US alone. So it seems the DVD had a lifespan of 10 years. That means with the progression of technology the Blu-ray may not even be the format of choice in 2018.
