Is ‘The Daily’ the future of magazines or the past?

We’ve been reading the new iPad-only news magazine The Daily for the past couple of weeks and we thought we’d post this video walkthrough and our views on this new platform for reading magazines.

We’re going to skip the behind-the-scenes stuff as you can read about how much Rupert Murdoch spent to make it, the staff number and all that elsewhere. What we’re going to attempt to answer is: Is this the future of magazines and is it worth you spending money on?

First off, The Daily is only available in the US app store, a simple workaround will get you in and for the rest of the month its free, so you can try it for yourself now after that its 99 cents/HK$8 a week or US$40/HK$320 a year.

What is it:
After having read it for 2 weeks its basically Time, Newsweek, People and Wired rolled into one in terms of content. The Daily covers world news and heavily feature the recent problems in Egypt and Libya then sashays into the Grammy’s, coffee making and best apps for skiing.

Essentially it is for the time crunched individual who needs a snapshot of world news mixed in with current events that he or she can view on the way to the office or over breakfast.

The Interactive:
A few of the photos come to life as video and The Daily tries to slip in 360 panaramas, Twitter feeds and polls into each story where they can to enhance which already beats print but we wouldn’t call it a multimedia magazine in that it feels like stuff thrown in on top after the story has been put together not from the beginning.

The content:
The main categories split up into:

News

Gossip

Opinion

Arts & Life

Apps & Games

Stories are interesting and well written – longer than free newspapers in the MTR but shorter than full magazine articles. You get what you need and move on.

It’s also targeted at an American audience as the Sports section is heavy on American sports and must be aimed at men as the section is much longer than the gossip section.

Here is a video of what it looks like on the iPad:

Wrap Up:
It’s a good attempt at aan all-in-one news magazine for the iPad but its targeted at a very time-conscious consumer that doesn’t have time to add RSS feeds into Flipboard or Pulse or even know how to do it. Which means this product is for the non-geek iPad owner.

All the news The Daily reports on you can read elsewhere online for free so its not the the content that draws you in. You can get a similar snapshot for free with the awesome USA Today app that we love scanning in the morning as well.

The ads try to be interactive but end up being in the way and taking too long to load that we just spin right by them.

Navigation is good, design is good – things we expect from a product created by Rupert Murdoch. The social media aspects for a paid product are something to be desired by we’re guessing if you’re time-crunched as it is, you have little time for Twitter and Facebook anyways.

The interactive features don’t add much, so without that there isn’t much of a killer feature that makes The Daily a must read or must buy. Its a good attempt at launching a digital magazine at a great price. Paying $40 a year for 365 issues of well researched, well written content seems like a steal but its not worth it for those who know how to find the news themselves but great for those that need to get their daily news fix in an easy to update package.

The cool new “it” gadget right now is Amazon.com’s Kindle and Kindle DX that allows you to download and read eBooks. The Kindle 2 will set you back HK$2,000 and the DX due out on the 19th of January and has a sticker price of HK$3,800.

The Kindle is probably the greatest invention since the Guttenberg Press and with great innovation, comes great products that look to follow that success, so you won’t be too surprised that there are already a few electronic companies offering their own versions of the Kindle to capitalize on its success.

Enter Hanvon: who hope to get a slice the eBook reader pie with four different models for you to choose from. The WISEreader N526 and N520 available only in white come with a built in QWERTY keyboard. The difference between the two is that the N526 has stylus pen input that allows you to write annotations and notes in the eBook you are reading, while the N520 doesn’t.

The N518 and N516 which are little less expensive don’t include a built-in keyboard but do come in either black or white. The N518 also has stylus pen input like the N526, while the N516 doesn’t.

All of the models come with E-Ink technology that allows you to easily read what’s on the display under any lighting conditions. Based on E-ink technology developed by MIT the eReaders have a paper-like visual effect giving readers the illusion that they are looking at a page from a real book. The eReaders all come with a 5 inch 8-Level gray scale screen that can also display JPG, TIF, BMP, PNG, GIF images in black and white (or eight shades of grey if you what to nitpick).

All four eReaders can also play WAV, WMA, MP3 music files so you can also listen to your favourite tunes on a pair of headphones while you read. Each eReader is equiped with a SD card slot that can support cards up to 32GB of storage capacity that you can fill with all your favourite books and music.

Hanvon boast an incredible 8000+ page flips per a battery charge with USB recharging taking 4 hours and 2 Hours when using AC wall charger.

The most relieving specification of these readers was the fact that they didn’t emit any radiation, so all you bookworms out there won’t be “Hulking Out” from being exposed to too much gamma radiation.

So far Neonpunch has only found one store in Hong Kong selling the eReaders, for those interested in checking them out in person you can find the N526 and N516 in Sham Shui Po’s Golden Computer Arcade. They only have two out of the four models and are selling the N526 for HK$2,980 and the N516 for HK$2,350.

January 19, 2010

The DX goes global in 100 countries on January 19.

The 9.7″ ebook reader from Amazon called the Kindle DX is now getting ready to ship to Hong Kong, with global wireless available for pre-order today for HK$3,800/US$489 and shipping out on January 19th.

The main difference between the DX and the Kindle 2 is the size both in screen, memory and price:

Kindle 2 has a 6″ screen and holds 1,500 books for HK$2,000.

Kindle DX has a 9.7″ screen and its 3.3GBsize holds 3,500 books for HK$3,800.

We saw the DX in person a few weeks ago and it’s huge in comparison; a great size for reading at home or in the office, but probably not something manageable to pull out at yum cha or in the MTR during rush hour.

Yes, this sucks for everyone who bought the Kindle for Christmas, but good for those who waited because they wanted something bigger. You knew it was going to happen, especially in light of this week’s Consumer Electronics Show that will no doubt be introducing a dozen competitors to the eBook reader market.

Kindle DX with Global Wireless offers customers the same features that have helped make Kindle DX a top seller since it was introduced last May:

Wireless Delivery of Personal and Professional Documents: Customers can take their personal and professional documents with them around the world with Kindle DX. They can even wirelessly receive personal and professional documents while they’re on the road, saving the hassle of searching for a printer or fax machine.

Built-In PDF Reader: Kindle DX features a built-in, native PDF reader using Adobe Reader Mobile technology for reading professional and personal documents. With a larger display and built-in PDF reader, Kindle DX customers can read professional and personal documents with more complex layouts without scrolling, panning, or zooming, and without re-flowing. Everything from annual reports with graphs to flight manuals with maps to musical scores can be viewed on a single, crisp screen with Kindle DX.

Auto-Rotation: Kindle DX’s display content auto-rotates so users can read in portrait or landscape mode, or flip the device to read with either hand. Simply turn Kindle DX and immediately see full-width landscape views of maps, graphs, tables and images.

3.3 GB Memory Holds up to 3,500 Books: With 3.3 GB of available memory, Kindle DX can hold up to 3,500 books, compared to 1,500 with Kindle. And because Amazon automatically backs up a copy of every Kindle book purchased, customers can wirelessly re-download titles from their library at any time.

Annotation and Bookmarks: The Kindle DX keyboard lets customers add annotations to text, just as they would write in the margins of a book. Customers can edit, delete and export these notes, highlight and clip key passages, and bookmark pages for future use. Additionally, Kindle DX automatically bookmarks the last page a customer reads of any content.

Automatically Syncs With Kindle and Kindle Compatible Devices: Amazon’s Whispersync technology automatically syncs customers’ last page read, bookmarks, notes and highlights across Kindle, Kindle DX and Kindle-compatible devices like Kindle for PC and Kindle for iPhone, as well as additional applications coming soon, including Kindle for Mac and Kindle for Blackberry.

Incredibly Thin: Kindle DX is just over a third of an inch, which is thinner than most magazines.

Adjustable Text Size: Kindle DX has six adjustable font sizes to suit your reading preference. You can increase the text size of your favorite book or periodical with the push of a button. If your eyes tire, simply increase the font size and continue reading comfortably. Now every book in your library can be large print.

3G Wireless, No PC, No Hunting for Wi-Fi Hot Spots: Just like Kindle, Kindle DX customers automatically take advantage of Amazon Whispernet to wirelessly shop the Kindle Store, download or receive new content in less than 60 seconds, and read from their library—all without a PC, Wi-Fi hot spot, or syncing. Amazon still pays for the wireless connectivity on Kindle DX so books can be downloaded in less than 60 seconds—with no monthly fees, data plans or service contracts.

Extended Battery Life: Kindle DX now offers extended battery life – read for up to one full week with wireless on and up to two weeks with the wireless turned off.

Text-to-Speech: Kindle DX offers the experimental read-to-me feature “Text-to-Speech” that converts words on a page to spoken word so customers have the option to read or listen. Customers can switch back and forth between reading and listening, and their spot is automatically saved. Pages turn automatically while the content is being read so customers can listen hands-free. Using the read-to-me feature with books, newspapers, magazines, blogs and personal documents, Kindle DX can read to you.

No Set Up Required: When customers order a Kindle DX, it arrives from Amazon.com ready to use. There is no software to load or set up. Customers are immediately ready to shop, purchase, download and read from Kindle.

Built-in Dictionary and Wikipedia: Kindle has built-in access to The New Oxford American Dictionary, which contains over 250,000 entries and definitions, so readers can easily look up the definitions of words within their reading. Kindle customers also have seamless access to the world’s most exhaustive and up-to-date encyclopedia—Wikipedia.org. With Kindle DX in hand, looking up people, places, events and more has never been easier. It gives whole new meaning to the phrase “walking encyclopedia.”

The new Kindle DX with Global Wireless replaces the Kindle DX with U.S. wireless, which is no longer available.

Here’s what we think after a few weeks with the popular eBook reader.

Amazon.com was nice enough to come to Hong Kong to promote the Kindle in special events to the Chinese and English press. Its whole word-of-mouth advertising movement is the best kind for this type of product, because it’s so new and so game-changing that no amount of giant billboards around Hong Kong could whip up a better frenzy than hearing from your book-loving friend that this is simply great!

To be honest, before we had a Kindle in our hands we thought it was a lame device, having seen the Kindle 1.0. But, having the Kindle 2.0 in our hands, it really is a different device and will indeed transform the way you read books – especially in Hong Kong where bookshelf space is limited.

The device itself is slim, sleek, lightweight, easy to use, easy to read and has a great battery. So, pretty much everything you’ve read about it is true! Getting past the downside of no touch screen that we are so used to with the iPhone, the little “joystick” controller is just as easy to use to get through the different menus and the big “flapper” buttons on each side allow for easy page turns, even with a cup of coffee in your hands!

Amazon gave us some store credit to download books – which was great but not even necessary as they allow for sample downloads of everything – so you can read a few chapters before you buy. Buying a book is as easy as buying a song in iTunes, and it downloads in 60 SECONDS….faster than you can steal a car! The big problem we had, and we know it’s not really supposed to do it, was reading comics and manga on it. The images were just still too small on the 6″ screen to read, but the covers of books and book illustrations that appear on some classics were amazing. Simply stunning representations in greyscale of the artwork on any electronic device that we’ve seen. That is the power of e-Ink for you!

One of the cooler features we found was how it interacts with the iPhone (and now your PC). There is a Kindle app for iPhone that syncs with your Amazon.com account. So, if you are reading Kindle at home and iPhone on the go, the Kindle will “bookmark” your page on either device and sync it with the other so no matter where you are you, will always know where you are, if you know what we mean! We can just imagine how many Old World book and paper companies are up in arms against Amazon – first they are putting printing machines out of business, now the bookmark industry is getting hit on the head.

Another feature we want to discuss is the difference between the International Kindle and the U.S. Domestic Kindle. The International one is now retailing for US$259 on Amazon.com – this gets Hong Kong buyers the Kindle and access to global WhisperNet (the 3G technology that allows for books to be downloaded wirelessly). So, basically, with the International version you never have to “plug-in” or “sync” your Kindle with your PC to get the books on it or magazines and newspapers. The main problem with the International version is that some books are more expensive (by a margin of 20-30% probably to subsidize the WhisperNet) and some of them, because of licensing issues, are not even available here. So, again, you are buying convenience with the International Kindle. If you decide you don’t need books that instantaneously and you aren’t a big business traveler, then you may want to settle for the U.S. Domestic Kindle and download all the books via your computer and forgo the WhisperNet functionality, but still have everything available and slightly cheaper.

Amazon sent a nice leather case (US$29.95 extra at check-out) with the Kindle, which we definitely recommend to those not wanting to go cold turkey with books, as it adds a flap that you can open. We consider the case “training wheels” for eReaders, but it’s also good to protect the screen from scratches.

We held an informal Kindle night with a group of Neonpunch readers and gave them all an hour with hands-on time with the Kindle and, out of the 10 in the group, about 50% were going to buy one after playing with it and seeing the quality of the e-Ink technology. One member was even going to fork over more money for the bigger DX! The others were still in a wait-and-see attitude since Barnes and Nobles just announced their Nook device which is seen to a be a competitor, even though it won’t be available to Hong Kong since because, as you know, we don’t have any Barnes and Nobles here. The stronger argument was that 2010 would see an explosion of more eBook readers, but the majority of die-hard gadget lovers can’t wait and will have a Kindle for Christmas this year!

So, to round this all up – everything you’ve read about the Kindle is true. It’s a great device and even more impressive when in your own hands. Now with even better battery life and native support for PDF’s, the Kindle is a big help for Hong Kong’s legal and venture industries making reading contracts fun again (ok, maybe not that far), but at least you can have the Kindle read them to you while you do something else.

Here is the direct link to the Kindle page for Hong Kong on Amazon.com and you can still order it now and get it in time for Christmas.

Seems like everyone is throwing down into the eReader market these days. Plastic Logic has announced their Que (prounouned “Q” not the Spanish word for “where”) which will be unveiled at CES 2010 in January.

Interestingly, Plastic Logic seems to not want to compete in the consumer market of reading novels and newspapers but is doing it for the business users, to allow for on the go document reading – how many Hong Kong lawyers and accountants read that last line and got excited?

The Que has a huge 8.5×11 inch touchscreen and is only 1/3 of an inch thick. A shatterproof display is the bonus which also includes both Wi-Fi and 3G connections with Barnes and Nobles also supplying the books.

Availability, pricing and more will be available in January, but we’re betting its more expensive than the Kindle but will have alot more security features built in. If you can wait that long, we’re sure there will be handful more to debut by 01/07/10. More at the Plastic Logic site here.

On Monday you can get a Kindle in Hong Kong with local 3G downloads.

On his way back to the U.S. via Tokyo, Charlie Tritschler – the Director of Product Management and Interaction Design for Lab126 (the Amazon.com company behind the Amazon Kindle) – stopped by Hong Kong to talk to us about the immensely popular Kindle eBook device. The digital book reader is now making its international debut (including Hong Kong) for HK$2,175 (US$279).

So, as of this coming Monday, the Kindle 2 will be available (along with 290,000+ English books, magazines and newspapers) in Hong Kong. You need to order it from Amazon.com and use the built-in 3G to download books anytime, anywhere. And with books like Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol at only US$9.95 and 900K in file size, you will find yourself filling your Kindle up quickly.

While there are no Chinese language books available for the time being, one of the most impressive features is its built in dictionary which allows you to instantaneously look up English definitions as well as having the Kindle read to you (good for learning pronunciation) you can define the font size, make notes with the keyboard, the E-Ink reproduction is amazing even on photos and illustrations – have a look at the gallery below; we are very impressed with how it displays full greyscale images – it even plays MP3′s!

You can read all the tech specs here. The question is: is it as good as people say? From what we saw last night (we hope to get a demo to properly play with soon) we can say: “Yes.” It’s definitely a product that does more than you think. The E-Ink technology is powerful, reading a screen in bright light with no loss of contrast is amazing, especially if you are used to reading from LCD screens. The features make it an essential gadget for people learning English and doing research. The device is thin, light and the amount of content you can download is staggering. Most importantly is that you can buy books instantly from the device without having to connect to your PC or Mac and if your Kindle is lost or stolen all the books can download automatically into your new one.

Something to think about though, the International Kindle is US$20 more than the US version, and it will allow websurfing but for some reason not allow you to read blogs (the reasons explained here) and some of the books are actually 20% more when downloading in Hong Kong. The U.S. model has different 3G hardware and won’t work overseas, so the question you want to ask yourself before choosing to buy the U.S. or the International model is how important is downloading content without the use of a PC hook-up to you?

Either way the few missing pieces don’t take away from what is a very powerful device to book lovers, English students and carrying a powerful talking piece when traveling. At the very least you will be the center of envy amongst your Singaporean friends!

We copy and pasted the exact restrictions for Hong Kong from the Amazon Kindle page so you can see the restrictions:

We are excited to now ship Kindle to Hong Kong. Customers in Hong Kong will enjoy:

We posted last week that Amazon’s Kindle was available internationally which allows all Hong Kong readers to easily buy and access ebooks from Amazon.com. Today, U.S. bookseller and publisher Barnes and Nobles fires back, or rather Gizmodo leaks out images of B&N’s proposed eBook reader and it looks to have a second screen to give you some color:

The first screen is an 6-inch e-ink display with an 800×600 pixel resolution. That’s standard for e-books, with this screen having similar refresh and contrast as the second generation Kindle’s. The second display, however, is as wide as the e-ink display but is a multitouch LCD that is meant to be used as the sole interface for browsing swiftly through colored book covers (like Apple’s coverflow, but books instead of of Album art) and buying “rather than forcing eink do things it was not made for.” It is 480×144 pixels in size and has a resolution of 150dpi.

The rumoured price is to be less than the US$279 Kindle and the books that B&N publishes will also come at deep discounts. The most interesting thing to us about this device is that it runs on the Android OS! Full details will be revealed next week along with the final name of the product so hold on to those Kindle dollars until you see the final specs for Barnes and Noble’s newest gadget.

Its been a long time coming but the ebook reader from Amazon – The Kindle – is finally being made available around the world. The device will be HK$2,175 (US$279) plus shipping to Hong Kong (Sorry the larger DX is not available outside of the US). Some of the highlights include:

Slim: Just over 1/3 of an inch, as thin as most magazines

Lightweight: At 10.2 ounces, lighter than a typical paperback

Books in Under 60 Seconds: Get books delivered wirelessly in less than 60 seconds; no PC required

3G Wireless: 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle; no annual contracts, no monthly fees, and no hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots

International Coverage: Enjoy 3G wireless coverage at home or abroad in over 100 countries

Paper-Like Display: Reads like real paper without glare, even in bright sunlight

Carry Your Library: Holds up to 1,500 books

Read-to-Me: With the experimental Text-to-Speech feature, Kindle can read newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books out loud to you, unless the book’s rights holder made the feature unavailable

As a business move for Amazon this is smart, sell this 1st generation device now before Apple and others release color eBook readers that do a whole lot more. Of course if you are a serious book reader, love tech manuals or just want to clean out your home bookshelf, you can’t go wrong with a Kindle.

You can pre-order the Kindle now, and they begin shipping in 2 weeks, so plenty of time to make it to Hong Kong for you to test it out, love it and order more for Christmas gifts. And check out the big discounts on books like Dan Brown’s newest book The Lost Symbol as well over 350,000 other fiction and non-fiction books, newspapers and magazines.
