If you are interested in the Flip camera you most likely already have one because you are  a gadget loving early-adopter. Now the rest of Hong Kong can finally walk into a Fortress and buy one for themselves. We guess, that is, if they don’t already have an iPhone or an Android phone which shoots some pretty nice HD video already and does so much more.

The Flip models now in Hong Kong are the Mino 4GB, Mino 8GB and Ultra HD (8GB). The 4GB Mino can shoot up to an hour of HD video while the 8GB model and the Ultra HD can film up to 2 hours of footage. All the Flip models shoot HD video 720p (1280 x 720) at 60 fps, have 2X digital zoom and built-in image stabilisation.

The main features of the Flips are that they are simple and easy to use, much like how the first iPods was. There’s one big red button for record and all the other buttons are so common sense that it literally doesn’t need to be explained to anyone over the age of 4. The software to view and edit your recorded movies is contained on the Flip device so you never have to go hunting for an install CD any more.

Neonpunch got to play with the 4GB version at the launch and we have to say it is very user friendly, almost Apple-like (stress on “almost”) in design simplicity. We had the Flip up and working in seconds recording and playing back our clips like we’ve had it for years.

There a few draws backs to the Flip however, the main thing being that there is no expansion slots to put in memory cards or changeable battery. Users will be stuck with the on board memory so if you run out then you have to open up a laptop and download your clips or choose a clip to delete to make more room. Also if you run out of power for Mino HD you have to find a USB port to recharge it which might be hard if you’re in a country park or at the beach.

Another concern we had was the limited lens view we had, it would have been nicer if the devices had a wider lens range. We found the wide range just barely enough and would like to have seen more zoom power than 2x digital zoom. However according to FLIP’s website add-on lens can be purchased to meet would be film makers needs.

Cisco is targeting the non-tech savvy and housewife consumer group with this little DV recorder and for that group this is a great little device. The device records in HD and is small, compact and light enough to slip into a shirt or pants pocket.

For those who are looking for something more versatile than you might want to consider a actually camcorder, for those that have  a smartphone already this may be like carrying another digital camera with you.

To help promote the Philips’ Ambilight LED TVs the electronics giant has partnered with renowned film producers, Ridley Scott Associates (RSA) – founded by Sir Ridley Scott to produce a series of films that would show off the winning attributes of their new line of Philips TVs and Ambilight technology.

The project called Parallel Lines is a unique series of five short films. The thematically linked films are available to view online at www.philips.com/cinema from today. They are part of a new global campaign demonstrating the cinematic capabilities of Philips TVs and were each created in a different genre, with a different storyline, but all following the same dialogue.

More than 45 submissions were received, and five ground-breaking short films were produced whose genres range from drama, action, animation, to sci-fi and thriller. The five film directors are Greg Fay, Johnny Hardstaff, Carl Erik Rinsch, Jake Scott and Hi-Sim.

“I’m impressed by the films and the way the directors tackled the challenge of following a single dialogue. They have interpreted it creatively and their technical execution is impeccable,” comments director and founding partner of RSA, Sir Ridley Scott.

For those not familiar with Philips Ambilight series of products they generally include what can be basically described as a multi-coloured night light. The TV’s do feature what are undeniably the best images that we at Neonpunch have seen from a TV. However by prepared to pay a premium for these TV sets or if you have been a really good boy or girl maybe Santa will put one under the tree for you this Christmas.

Sony Hong Kong recently unveiled its first ultra-compact, interchangeable lens system digital cameras, the NEX-5 and NEX-3 to a packed Sheraton ballroom of reporters and dealers. The cameras not due out in Hong Kong until the end of June, have already garnered a lot of interest.

While we were wined and dined, a bevy of models came round the tables to show off the two new cameras that look like a digital compact camera with a SLR lens attached to it. The camera is reminiscent of one of Sony’s early digital cameras the SonyDSC-F717 that unfortunately didn’t feature an ability to use interchangeable lens.

According to the literature given out by Sony the camera are equipped with the latest Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor and high speed BIONZ processor, allowing the NEX-5 and NEX-3 to deliver DSLR image quality and Full HD movie recording with rich tonal gradation and lower noise. The NEX-5 delivers Full HD 1080i resolution movie recording in either AVCHD or MPEG4 format, while the NEX-3 records HD videos in MPEG4 format. The cameras also offer higher ISO sensitivity of up to 12,800, up to 14.2-megapixel resolution and defocusing to achieve beautiful images even in low light environments without having to use a tripod or flash.

Thanks to its interchangeable lens system, the NEX-5 and NEX-3 enables photographers to swap between lenses for greater flexibility and precision, allowing users to shoot photos and videos with the ultra-compact wide-angle, standard zoom, and high-power zoom E-mount lenses. With the optional Ultra Wide-Angle Converter and Fisheye Converter and via the use of the A-Mount Adaptor LA-EA1, photographers can also use the existing wide range of A-mount lenses with the NEX-5 and NEX-3.

Integrating a mirror less design, the NEX-5 is the smallest and lightest interchangeable lens system camera available on the market today. Weighing approximately 229g and measuring 110.8mm × 58.8mm × 38.2mm (W x H x D), the NEX-5 provides both professional and amateur photographers a light and compact digital camera that they carry with them at all times. A mere 24.3mm thick, the NEX-5 can fit nicely into pockets or handbags.

The NEX series features a simplified and colourful control layout system, a control wheel and two customizable soft keys. The new Graphic User Interface features six clearly labeled icons that can be selected by rotating and then pressing the control wheel to access shoot settings, a user interface common in compact cameras that makes the NEX series easy for photographers to get used to the extensive manual controls.

The 3-inch extra fine LCD monitor can be tilted 80° up and 45° down to allow users to view their subjects and shoot even at awkward angles. The screen features a high 921,600 dots resolution with a 16:9 widescreen display, and integrates TruBlack technology which allows subject details and subtle tonal gradations to be displayed with deep blacks and high contrast, making it easy to focus on subjects accurately.

Each camera also sports a memory card slot which enables the use of both Memory Stick and SD media. The NEX series is compatible with the latest Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX media, enabling the fastest transfer speed of up to 4 times that of the Memory Stick PRO Duo Mark 2 and maximizing continuous shooting with its large data capacity of up to 32GB. The HX also enhances burst shooting, so consumers can afford to shoot more pictures in one minute without missing any key shots during shooting compared to using any SD Memory Card now available on the market.

The NEX-5 will be available in black and silver while the NEX-3 will offer four colour options that include black, red, silver and white. When purchasing the NEX-5 or NEX-3 during the pre-ordering period from May 24 to June 23, 2010, buyers will receive a 16GB SD Memory Card for free.

Like the Toruk Makto in Avatar, Samsung has jumped on their flying dragon with an aggressive launch of 3D HD LCD TV’s in Hong Kong. Slapping movie theatres in the face so fast, the can now speak the Na’vi dialect fluently.

The full HD LED TV Series comes in sizes from 40″ to 65″ mixed with the 3D Blu-ray player and the 3D Active glasses will  bring Hollywood movies screaming into your living room.

We were able to demo the screens with the glasses on Monsters Vs. Aliens and the quality is amazingly clear. The 3D resolution is at 1920×1080 and is really quite immersive. Its really hard to write too much about this kind of product – you need to get yourself down to a Samsung reseller and test it out for yourself.

And although the following TVC will not get the kind of play an Apple ad would get, it really is amazing:

Yes, we’d still like a 3D TV without the glasses but the 34kg lightweight frames had a nice feel to them that we’re OK with them. They are using active shutter and not the polarized type so there is reduced flicker and judder.

But you really have to see it to believe it and this Easter weekend; Samsung has set up test centers all over Hong Kong at malls from Pacific Place to City Plaza, and if you get down there and buy a TV this weekend Samsung is giving away 3D Starter Kits; that includes 2 sets of glasses and a copy of the 3D version of Monsters vs Aliens and

So definitely have a look if you haven’t OD’s on chocolate bunny rabbits.

Japanese Electronics giant Sanyo has released two new camcorders for the local market. Whether you’re making home movies of your bundle of joy or a wannabe film maker the new Xacti Dual Cameras will help you get the job done.

The Ultra slim VPC-CS1 can easily slip into any pocket thanks to its lightweight design (approx. 5 oz), and slim body (1.06” in thickness). It can capture Full HD videos with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels in either MPEG-4 AVC or H.264 video format. The VPC-CS1 can also take high resolution 8-megapixel images using its advanced 10x zoom to 38mm wide angle lens.

If you’re looking for something with a little more power and some meat to it then Sanyo has the VPC-SH1. It can capture high quality 10-megapixel photos and Full HD videos with its 35mm wide angle lens and 30x zoom.

After a somewhat disappointing initial release back in February, hard-drive manufacturer Seagate has released an updated version of its FreeAgent Theater HD Media Player called, simply, the Seagate FreeAgent Theater+.

The FreeAgent Theater+ makes storing and using your media files a breeze. Simply load the hard-drive with your selection of movies, music, videos and pictures from your home PC and slide it into the FreeAgent Theater+ docking system to get instant access to your digital media library on your HD TV.

Like its first generation, the FreeAgent Theater+ still allows users to slide and exchange modules between your PC and home-theater; but unlike its predecessor, the FreeAgent Theater+ actually acts as a home-network, drastically simplifying the process of streaming your content directly from your PC to your television.

We use Seagate drives to back up our data because they are small and cheap, now we can just take it to our TV to watch all our vides on a bigscreen. This changes movie night at a friends house, or even how you will lend out your DVD collections in the future.

The new FreeAgent Theater+ has been updated with a 1080p HDMI output port, Dolby Digital and DTS 2.0 and Ethernet connectivity. It also now supports a number of (previously unsupported) video formats including: MPEG-1 MPEG-2 (VOB/ISO), MPEG-4 (DivX(R)/Xvid formats), DivX HD, Xvid HD, AVI, MOV, MKV, RMVB, AVC HD, H.264, WMV9, VC-1, M2TS, and TS/TP/M2T. Sony has some new runnings at the HD LCD TV Market with the new Bravia S5500 and S5700 series of TVs. Both HD’s use the Bravia Engine 3 image processor, Live Colour and built-in digital tuner and Advanced Contrast Enhancer. Included, also, are the S-Force Front Surround sound systems which we’re told are nice.

There’s a few cool features and accessories for this day and age are the Bravia Sync remote which can sync with a variety of your electronics including your TV. There’s also power-saving abilities like the automatic Ambient Light Sensor which brightens or dims the light depending on the current light levels in the room and the TV switches to standby mode when no input signal from the remote or PC is detected for 30 seconds.

Interestingly enough, the S5500′s 32″ (no confirmation yet on the 26 and 37) comes in 3 colors: black, brown and blue while the 22″ comes in silver and is designed to be more portable for your children who apparently like to watch TV in every single room of the house.

If you want a camcorder nowadays, you’d better go HD. That’s why Sony announced their upcoming successor to the Handycam CX-12– the AVCHD Memory Stick Handycam CX-500.

As we go further into the technological era, our expectations for entertainment goes higher and higher everyday. To meet our new standards for Full HD movies and High-Fidelity Surround Sound at home, Sony launched two Blue-Ray home theatre systems: BDV-E800 and BDV-E300, as well as a new Blue-Ray disk player — the BDP-S360 — for those of you that are already satisfied with their high-end sound system.

First, let’s take a look at the BDV-E800 and BDV-E300.
