Review: Alice in Wonderland

Friday. 5 March. 2010. 3:07 pm

Tim Burton’s pulls us into a super imaginative 3D rabbit hole.

Tim Burton’s career has been up and down for me. Beetlejuice, Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands were all ups, and then a few downs like Planet of the Apes and I didn’t like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory even though I’d love to live there.

So I entered his newest film Alice in Wonderland with slightly low expectations. Actually very low. And of course when you do that, you come away usually very surprised. And this was the case for Alice.

Burton’s new version (which isn’t a re-imagination, but more of a re-interpretation) gives a bit more depth to the Alice character with a framing sequence that develops her better. This time the story gives us a bit more context to the Wonderland she visits, while providing a new spin on the 2 books its based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

But lets get to the real reason to see it: the visuals. Anybody who’s seen a Tim Burton movie knows that they are going to see something special. Even though I didn’t like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the design work was amazing. I believe that Alice in Wonderland is Burton’s most iconic designed movie since Nightmare Before Christmas. Though the story suffered a bit from being straightforward (mostly since I have read the books and seen various film and TV versions) the visuals and performances kept the movie alive, and while I was looking at my watch to wonder when I could get out of Pandora, I wanted this movie to continue so I could see what character would show up next out of Burton’s or rather Johnny Depp’s magic hat of tricks.

Here’s a sampling of some of the concept art and stills from the film before you continue reading:

‘Clash of the Titans’ Brings More 3D to Hong Kong

Thursday. 25 February. 2010. 10:21 am
April 1, 2010

The stop-motion classic gets a massive 3D overhaul on April 1st.

Even if you don’t remember Harry Hamlin’s Perseus fighting stop-motion monsters like Medusa, Calibos and The Kraken, it doesn’t matter because it all changes on April 1st, 2010 with the new 3D version of Clash of the Titans.

Even with Percy Jackson beating it out by a month or so, because of the decision to add in 3D effects, Clash of the Titans was the ultimate Greek god/monster movie in 1981 – and now with Avatar’s Jake Sully Sam Worthington in the lead as Perseus, Liam Neeson as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades  and directed by Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier can only be excited to see how the effects sharpen up this remake.

Namco Bandai Games is developing a Clash of the Titans game for Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3 as well. Keep your eyes peeled for a possible movie ticket giveaway and get ready to clash once again on April 1st.

For your enjoyment the original trailer is below, we hope they keep Bubo, the mechanical owl sidekick in the new version:

Thursday. 11 February. 2010. 11:17 am

The Greeks myths are in Hong Kong starting today.

While some of the Neonpunch team were at iPhanatics last night, some of us were at the premiere of director Chris Columbus’ latest magical movie, which sees the world of Greek mythology rebooted for a new millennium in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

The movie is based on a tween novel series written by Rick Riordan and is in a similar vein as the Harry Potter books. The Lightning Thief is based on the first book in the series and introduces the world of our protagonist Percy and his friends.

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland Goes Through Hong Kong’s Looking Glass

March 4, 2010

Don’t be late for this very important date.

After you’ve Avatar’ed the hell out of yourself this past 60 days, its time to avert your gaze to some new films opening in Hong Kong.

One of the more clever visual looking films coming this year is again from the mind of director Tim Burton. We think Burton is hit (Sleepy Hollow) and miss (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) we are very excited to see what he does with the Alice in Wonderland story.

We hope you didn’t throw away your Avatar glasses because Alice in Wonderland will be in 3D and opens in Hong Kong on March 4th and looks like it will be bumping out Avatar in either both or at least one of the IMAX cinemas in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong poster and trailer are below.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox Animates Hong Kong Fantastically

Friday. 5 February. 2010. 10:48 am
March 25, 2010

Celebrate the Year of the Tiger with a Fox.

It’s good to see more stop-motion animated movies in the cinemas again. Last year’s Coraline was a marvel to look at, but if little girls with button eyes didn’t do it for you, George Clooney thinks his Fantastic Mr. Fox may be more to your liking, which opens in Hong Kong on March 25, 2010.

Based on the book by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Roald Dahl, this version directed by Wes Anderson featuring the voices of Clooney, Meryl Streep, Owen Wilson and Bill Murray has been 2 years in the making. The interesting thing about this production is that all the voices were recorded outside instead of in a studio giving them a more spontaneous and alive feeling than maybe a more still performance you’d get inside a small sound booth.

Fantastic Mr. Fox came out in November in the US and has garnered a lot of great reviews and it recently was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the Golden Globes but lost to Pixar’s Up – but has 2 Academy Award nominations – and thanks to that we get a theatrical release for this film in Hong Kong.

The trailer and more information on the stop motion technique is below.
