Continuing the gambling metaphors it looks like Samsung Hong Kong has pulled a triple 7 with the release of their Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. Both tablets use Android 3.2 (Honeycomb); and while the devices have the same specifications in most areas, there are major differences between the two.

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is powered by a 1.4 GHz Dual Core Processor and sports a 7.7 inch Color SUPER AMOLED Plus full touch display, and comes with a slightly large battery 5100mAh. The Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is powered by a 1.2 GHz Dual Core Processor; has a 7 inch Color PLS full touch display, and a 4000mAh battery.

To help promote the two new tablets Samsung Hong Kong has hired the local actor Louis Koo; who has shot four television adverts that show him trapped on a bus after services has ended with a somewhat hysterical Korean girl.

Unfortunately prices for either device have yet to be announced.

The tablet war between iPad and Android-powered tablets heats up with a third contender in the form of the HP TouchPad.

Hewlett-Packard comes into this fight as an underdog with a tablet that is powered by their own operating system and over a year behind the top dog Apple – and a completely new OS to Hong Kong as they haven’t officially released their WebOS smartphones the Pre, Pixi or the Veer – so they must be pretty confident in the TouchPad to release it here with so much competition.

The TouchPad features a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core APQ8060 processor with a 9.7-inch diagonal, LED backlit multi-touch capacitive display and a front-facing 1.3MP camera and digital microphone for live video calling.

The designed from the ground up webOS fully supports Flash and HTML5 and was especially highlighted in Roland K. Ng (HP Director of WebOS in Asia-Pacific/Japan) speech when he said “we aren’t like other people who are going to try to convince you otherwise.”

The new tablet webOS lets you move back and forth seamlessly between multiple applications and activities. With HP webOS you can search the web while writing email; reply to a notification while scrolling through a playlist, or update your Facebook status just by starting to type.

On Wednesday Samsung Hong Kong launched their new tablet device the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at an over-crowded venue that had technology reporters standing as far as outside the front doors of SML on the eleventh floor of Times Square. The event was a little more low-key in comparison to the 7 inch Tab launch of last year. On had to help launch the new bigger 10.1 Tab was local celebrity MC Jin.

The Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 is powered by 1GHz dual core processor and runs on the Android 3.1 Honeycomb platform. The Tab sports a 10.1-inch ultra-large WXGA TFT screen, is a slim 8.6mm thick and weighs 565g (3G version Wi-Fi only version is 5 grams lighter). The wide display is supported with Adobe Flash Player, stereo speakers on the sides, and HD Video Recording and Playback, making it a nice portable home theatre system.

On Tuesday Lenovo Hong Kong launched the IdeaPad Tablet K1 an Android 3.1 powered tablet device making it one of a handful that uses the Honeycomb OS.

The IdeaPad Tablet K1 comes in both a Wi-Fi and 3G version and is available in four styles white, red, black leather, and dark brown leather.

Along with the 3.1 Android OS the tablet comes pre-load with 30 free apps that includes games like Angry Birds HD, Galaxy on Fire 2 THD, Vendetta Online and Need for Speed: Shift. Other apps include a number of apps by ArcSoft like Video Player, PhotoStudio Paint, Movie Story. Also included is Kindle for Android, Zinio, SocialTouch, PokeTALK, Documents to Go, and Norton Mobile Security.

Lenovo will also be selling a few accessories to go with the K1 like protective sleeves and a keyboard/docking station.

Blackberry’s much touted Playbook will be making its way to Hong Kong sometime in “early” July and that’s as much information RIM Hong Kong was going to give us on a release date for their little tablet.

We could go on and on about how lackluster the press event was but we’ll sidetrack that rant and concentrate on what the Blackberry actually has to offer that will make it more attractive than the iPad 2 and the numerous Android tablets out there? Let’s take a look.

The Playbook comes with support for Adobe Flash, Adobe Mobile AIR and HTML-5, with this Blackberry hope to offer its user a superior web browsing experience. The device from RIM includes dual HD cameras for picture and video capture and video chatting. It also has the option of being connected to external displays via HDMI allowing presentation, viewing of documents and files and sharing photos and videos on larger screens.

HTC invited us over to their Hong Kong offices earlier this week to have some private time with their new Android tablet: the HTC Flyer.

Granted we only spent an hour with it, and the final ROM build was not yet finalized we had enough time to give some thoughts on the device and to give you some idea whether or not this will be your next Android device.

The final release date and the price are still undefined but we hear end of May and at a price point around HK$6000+ for the 32GB model. So that means all the Flyer’s are ready in the factory for the final software to be installed! We find that fascinating. Especially if they are shipping them in less than 3 weeks.

So with the iPad 2 hitting Hong Kong, Android fans are waiting for a tablet to call their own. The HTC Flyer hits that mark very closely.

Its 7″ – so its comparable in size to the Galaxy Tab – but that’s where the comparisons end. The Tab is made from head to toe of plastic, where as the Flyer follows Apple’s lead and is made of a metal unibody. It has a plastic removable area so that you can put in your SD card and a data-only SIM (no voice).

On the first look its like a giant HTC Android phone – much like what people said about the iPad – HTC Sense is layered on top of Gingerbread giving the user all of the functions you get with the latest HTC smartphone.

One of the standout features is HTC Scribe with pen. Maybe in western markets the need for a pen is redundant but in HK and Asian countries it makes sense as an input device for writing Chinese. This pen does more too – basically every single screen allows you to write on it. And with a palette of different pen types from pencil to calligraphy pen to highlighter; and a huge color palette you can really doodle like crazy on this thing. And you can share it to Facebook, Twitter or email it right away (check out the photo gallery below to see how we used it). The trick though was that the pen can only write, it cannot be used as a finger replacement – so you have to get used to balancing between using your finger and the pen.

The pen was good for highlighting sentences and words in books like Sun Tzu’s Art of War and you can make handwritten notes on select passages that you can refer to later.

The only strange thing is that HTC didn’t include a drawing app with filters and pre-drawn shapes and backgrounds for the young (or young-at-heart) doodlers, but we’re guessing there are plenty of those apps in the Android Marketplace.

At 7″ it’s obviously smaller than the iPad but the size means the guts have to be moved around and it makes it appear a tad bit thicker than the iPad 2.

The Flyer comes with its own movie store – but we won’t talk about that since it won’t work in Hong Kong – but you will have access to trailers like The Good Guys. It also has a HDMI output adapter so you can play videos on your HDTV.

It comes in a nifty white soft pouch with a hook for the pen. A magnetic clasp keeps the Flyer secure in the pouch. Its efficient but doesn’t seem that interesting for such a product.

So, it’s definitely the best looking, best feeling Android tablet we’ve held in our hands. We think HTC Sense and Scribe do add a lot of finesse to the OS and make it easier for regular people to use. We think the pen will be a hit here in Hong Kong, especially with students.

The only thing we’re hesitant about is the price – but then again all the Android tablets seem to have a big price tag – but we can definitely see that HTC put some muscle into the hardware.

All in all – we’re going to say for size, look and features – the HTC Flyer is a great tablet for those that must go Android. But knowing HTC there will be another tablet out by Q4 that might be able to fix some issues and hopefully price.

HTC is going to get you one way or the other – either with their army of Android smartphones or in what is no doubt the first in an array of tablet devices to compete with the iPad.

Our sources said that HTC would deliver a tablet in early 2011, so we guess May is close enough for the new 7″ Gingerbread Android tablet the HTC Flyer.

Does it fly? Not on the proper Android tablet OS it doesn’t but HTC has loaded it up with HTC Sense which brings better tablet functions as well as HTC Scribe which allows a pen to be used naturally and easily.

One thing we love: built-in synchronization with Evernote!

We’re guessing that Gingerbread is lacking quite a bit since not only did HTC load the Flyer with Sense and Scribe they also include HTC Watch which is their version of YouTube? The HTC Watch service enables low-cost on-demand progressive downloading movies from major studios, but maybe we won’t get it here as its launched initially in the UK, the US and Taiwan.

Encased in an aluminum unibody, it’s ultra-light, weighing as little as a paperback book, and compact enough to fit in a jacket pocket only. With a 7-inch display, a 1.5Ghz processor and high-speed HSPA wireless capabilities, the HTC Flyer tablet is

HTC Scribe Technology introduces integrated digital ink that make it easy and natural to take notes, sign contracts, draw pictures, or write on a web page or photo. A feature called Timemark enables you to capture the audio of a meeting in line with your written notes, so tapping on a word in your notes instantly takes you to that exact place in time in the audio recording of the meeting. Notes are also integrated with the calendar so when there is an appointment reminder you are automatically prompted with an opportunity to begin a new note.

HTC Flyer 3G and HTC Flyer WiFi will be available in May. We’re waiting on the final price but expect it to be around HK$6,400 for the 32GB model.

We’ve been reading the new iPad-only news magazine The Daily for the past couple of weeks and we thought we’d post this video walkthrough and our views on this new platform for reading magazines.

We’re going to skip the behind-the-scenes stuff as you can read about how much Rupert Murdoch spent to make it, the staff number and all that elsewhere. What we’re going to attempt to answer is: Is this the future of magazines and is it worth you spending money on?

First off, The Daily is only available in the US app store, a simple workaround will get you in and for the rest of the month its free, so you can try it for yourself now after that its 99 cents/HK$8 a week or US$40/HK$320 a year.

What is it:
After having read it for 2 weeks its basically Time, Newsweek, People and Wired rolled into one in terms of content. The Daily covers world news and heavily feature the recent problems in Egypt and Libya then sashays into the Grammy’s, coffee making and best apps for skiing.

Essentially it is for the time crunched individual who needs a snapshot of world news mixed in with current events that he or she can view on the way to the office or over breakfast.

The Interactive:
A few of the photos come to life as video and The Daily tries to slip in 360 panaramas, Twitter feeds and polls into each story where they can to enhance which already beats print but we wouldn’t call it a multimedia magazine in that it feels like stuff thrown in on top after the story has been put together not from the beginning.

The content:
The main categories split up into:

• News
• Gossip
• Opinion
• Arts & Life
• Apps & Games

Stories are interesting and well written – longer than free newspapers in the MTR but shorter than full magazine articles. You get what you need and move on.

It’s also targeted at an American audience as the Sports section is heavy on American sports and must be aimed at men as the section is much longer than the gossip section.

Wrap Up:
It’s a good attempt at aan all-in-one news magazine for the iPad but its targeted at a very time-conscious consumer that doesn’t have time to add RSS feeds into Flipboard or Pulse or even know how to do it. Which means this product is for the non-geek iPad owner.

All the news The Daily reports on you can read elsewhere online for free so its not the the content that draws you in. You can get a similar snapshot for free with the awesome USA Today app that we love scanning in the morning as well.

The ads try to be interactive but end up being in the way and taking too long to load that we just spin right by them.

Navigation is good, design is good – things we expect from a product created by Rupert Murdoch. The social media aspects for a paid product are something to be desired by we’re guessing if you’re time-crunched as it is, you have little time for Twitter and Facebook anyways.

The interactive features don’t add much, so without that there isn’t much of a killer feature that makes The Daily a must read or must buy. Its a good attempt at launching a digital magazine at a great price. Paying $40 a year for 365 issues of well researched, well written content seems like a steal but its not worth it for those who know how to find the news themselves but great for those that need to get their daily news fix in an easy to update package.

Engadget released these CG renders of HP’s entry into the tablet wars after they announced that February 9th they would be hosting a special event not only for media but for developers.

HP appears to be jumping in with 2 sizes – the 9″ Topaz and the 7″ Opal – two price points that will hopefully be priced competitively in the marketplace. From a post at Engadget today a few new specs have been leaked:

• the Opal will measure 180 x 144 x 13mm
• Opal and measures in at 241 x 190 x 13mm
• the “premium audio” we saw on that leaked marketing slide will indeed be powered by HP’s Beats audio processing
• the tablets will be provided with “tens of gigabytes” of cloud storage
• inductive charging will, in fact, be a feature of the HP / Palm tablets. (i.e. Touchstone)
• Flash support
• Phone-to-Tablet communication — if your smartphone rings it can be answered on the tablet or phone
• Tap to share: A feature that lets users easily transfer a website, document, or song from the phone to the tablet (or vice versa) simply by tapping the two devices together.
• the ability to run “up to 20 applications simultaneously”

So before you go jumping onto an iPad or an Android tablet, keep your eye open for the after Chinese New Year announcement from HP to see if their tablets will be a must have or not. The WebOS is a beautiful work of art that came out at the wrong time as a smartphone but after seeing the lackluster Android tablets at CES this may be the place it will shine and enter the race it needs to be in.

Samsung Hong Kong launched the Galaxy Tab yesterday at a big event in The Mira Hotel with special guests and the media. They were expecting to create a big noise here in Hong Kong with the event and give consumers an alternative to Apple’s iPad.

The Galaxy Tab gets points for running Adobe Flash, having a 3 megapixel camera with LED flash, 1080p playback in various file formats and utilizing the Swype keyboard interface and already stocking a bunch of Chinese book titles to choose from.

But that is about where the excitement stops. Stops dead and cold.

Here are our initial thoughts, bearing in mind that while we love the iPad, we were very open minded to this product because we believe that there must be choice in the gadget market for different types of users.

We played with a demo unit for about 15 minutes and had a Samsung rep help us through some of the screens – and here is what we thought:

Plastic and light: Does the iPad’s aluminum shell really add that much weight? Well we’re guessing its better to have more girth in a sleek package than lightness in a cheap plastic. Even the Kindle’s plastic feels nicer.

Touchscreen not as good as the iPad: Yikes, this was the dealbreaker for us. The iPad is super responsive while we needed some effort to flip screens on the Tab. Even the Samsung support guy couldn’t make it move. You can tell how tough it is to click stuff with your finger – look at Samsung’s own demo video – the guy in the video is pushing everything ever so delicately – whilst in Apple videos people are hardly using any force – which you’d think was a video trick but its not:

They brought out 3 distinct types of people in their marketing video about who they think will like to use the Tab: Business people, Soho weekender (whatever that means) and even old people looking to read books. We’re thinking it would fail on all 3. Video conferencing in an office with the Tab? Not likely. Soho Weekend girl taking this expensive device? I guess you could say old people for the books because it is light, the size of a paperback book so it seems like the perfect gift to give to your parents if they are readers – but the Kindle might be better for them because they definitely won’t need the Android Market.

The HK apps are limited and the screen shows serious banding when looking at gradients! If that is a design flaw or a screen limitation someone should have killed that design.

Samsung’s ‘Readers Hub’ has already cooperated with various global e-book publishers including Kobo, PressDisplay and Zinio which provide more than 2-million e-books, magazines and newspapers among them, 1.8 millions e-books will be free for downloading. And the publishers will frequently update and expand the content in the future.

Samsung will also cooperate with several local publishers including Ming Pao Group, Crystal Window Books, Cultural Communication Press, Joint Publishing, GuangBo Media Limited, Ming’s Reader, Chung Hwa Book Co andCup etc. There are different types of books, such as magazine, novel, investment, travel, numerology, cultural etc. During the launching date, over a 400 books will be available for download (free or paid), written by famous local writer such as Ni Kuang, young scholar Ong Yi Hing, famous metaphysicians Mak Ling Ling and travelers Kam Ling.

It seems Samsung are going after the Kindle market more than the iPad as it’s compared to a paperback book which is what it seems like.

The price is too high for regular users for what it does.

The most strange thing is that even Google has admitted Android is NOT a Tablet OS, yet these hardware companies keep sticking it on – crippling their chances of actually making something good in the eyes of the public.

Its kind of at a detriment that the Tab is available in the same place you can see an iPad – any consumer that isn’t a blind Android lover will see which device is better and the price point is cheaper on the iPad too – but we have to be fair – comparing the Tab to the iPad is like comparing an iPhone to a Razr. Its 2 different devices that are meant for 2 different audiences. But it seems like the Tab is catering to an audience that has amazing vision, isnt easily frustrated and have never touched an iPad before.

It seems to get a lot of attention in the US – PCWorld seem to love it while T3 choose iPad over Tab.

Again with all gadgets get out there and play with it in the wild – but with HK’s style of easily being unimpressed we don’t see the Tab gaining too much traction here – but round of applause to Samsung for getting it out so quickly and making a stand in the Tablet War.
