The highlight of the recent Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair 2011 was the opening day’s evening gala event held by Prince Jewellery & Watch Company that showcased their most exquisite timepieces in the Grand Foyer Concourse of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Prince Jewellery & Watch Company proudly presented “A Poetry of Time” to officially unveil World Brand Piazza 2011, the most sensational prestigious watch exhibition in town. Renowned actor Joe Ma showcased a HK$76.8-million Kallania by Vacheron Constantin in a catwalk show with actress Samantha Ko and model Juliana S, accompanied by a spectacular performance by outstanding opera singers.

The ceremony was unveiled by a beautiful performance of “All I Ask of You” by Mr. Oliver Lo and Miss Margaret Yim. Then, after the speeches by Mr. Joseph Chu and Mr. Benjamin Chau, Mr. Warren Mok, MH, the Artistic Director of Opera Hong Kong was invited on stage to share his insights into the exciting crossover of prestigious watches and esteemed music performance.

The catwalk show was a magnificent affair with models gracefully gliding along the catwalk demonstrating limited edition timepieces from world-renowned watch brands including A. Luxury watch brand Federico Iguzzini is exceptional as much because of its compelling history as its one of a kind watches.

Christian Bedat was born into the world of luxury watches. With his mother, in 1997, Mr. Bedat started the brand Bedat & C° to immediate acclaim. In 2000 he sold to Gucci and in 2009 set off on his own to change the way the watch business is done. His brand, Red8, is a new breed of watch brand. Everything from marketing to manufacture is completely reimagined for the modern world.

The brand is sold exclusively online without advertising and the watches are proudly manufactured in Asia, marking a sharp break with the watch world’s obsession with Swiss craftsmanship.

We sat down with this one of a kind watchmaker at the Mandarin Orientals Clipper lounge.

What originally attracted you to watches and watch making?

Watches are part of my life. I was born into the watch industry. My mother was in the watch industry; she worked in watches all her life and was the cofounder of a brand [Bedat & C°] with me.

What do you hope to achieve with Red8? What sets the brand apart?

When you are in a very large organization it can be very difficult if you are of an independent mind. When I left I had no intention of getting back into the watch industry. In a way today I still believe that I am not. I am selling watches but one thing I am not is part of the traditional watch industry. Watches are my life so I’m going to make a watch but more important is that I sell this object exclusively online. I want to be out of the ordinary. Nobody needs another watch. So, how can I make a statement? I decided to work on colors, textures and the words on the bezel and most importantly, where as all high-end luxury watches are made in Switzerland, I thought I’m going to make my watch in Asia. I use very high quality suppliers, Japanese parts inside the watch, but it is Asia all the way.

What is the most popular style of Red8?

Fo the originals, the grey and black were very popular.  In terms of the new ones, people in finance love the long, short, bear, bull and the new blue ocean watch is also very popular.

How many watched do you personally own?

I do collect watches but only two brands.  Rolex and Patek Phillippe.  I have over one hundred but I keep them in my safe at home.  I also have some watches that I’ve made including some specially made white gold watches I made for my sons that I will give them when they turn 18.

Red8 seems to be a product of your rebellion against the watch establishment. Is that so?

Not a rebellion but a rebellious attitude.  I don’t want to rebel because I still love traditional luxury watches. But, Red8 certainly has a rebellious attitude because I want to make it in my own way. Find success in a new and different way.

In the history of Officine Panerai, wristwatches for left-handers appeared for the first time in the early 1940s, when the first examples were produced for the commandos of the Italian Navy with the winding crown and bridge protecting the crown on the left.

The Luminor 1950 case, in the classic Panerai size of 47 mm in diameter and the crown protector are made of brushed titanium with a polished bezel and a sapphire crystal back which enables the manufacture P.2002/9 movement, featuring three spring barrels which provide a power reserve of eight days, to be observed and the power reserve to be read. The brown sandwich dial has the small seconds dial at 3 o’clock, perfecting the aesthetic balance of the watch which has the bridge protecting the winding crown positioned on the left. The sandwich structure, the justification of which lay in the need to maximize the dial’s legibility when used underwater, consists of two superimposed discs between which is placed the luminous material with which the markers and figures are displayed. The hour and minute hands, as well as the small seconds hand, are coated with Super-LumiNova. Fitted with a brown antiqued leather strap. Water resistance to 100 m.
