It really is 2010…a breathalyzer in a watch!

Yes, many of you could have probably used this BEFORE New Year’s Eve, but we’re sure there will be plenty more applications for this unique gadget in your future.

Though we’ve passed the 2010 countdown, another festive holiday is fast approaching us as we begin preparations to welcome the Year of the Tiger with a bit of wine and drink. We all know that the local constabulary monitors the roads, streets and highways for people who are “driving under the influence” but, unfortunately, sometimes alcohol impedes our judgment so we think we are fit to drive.

Thankfully, Ezio has developed a watch that can test your alcohol level at a push of a button. In less than thirty seconds, you can find out whether or not you’re fit to drive.

The operation of the watch is simple and straight-forward: press the button at the 2 o’clock position until you hear a “beeping sound,” 12 LED lights will flash indicating the watch is getting ready for testing. After 10 seconds of flashing there will be another “beeping sound,” the LED light will flash clockwise meaning it’s ready for testing. Blow air closely onto the sensor for 3-4 seconds then wait for the test result. After another “beep” it will display your actual value of alcohol concentration by a long LED light indicating the test results. Your test result will show for 10 seconds then the LED display will turn off automatically. 1 LED light = 0.01% BAC (Normal alarm point to be set at 0.05%).

  1. This may not be as good an idea as it seems.

People have different tolerance to alcohol and the variation is quite large. There are many factors, such as BMI and ethnicity, both will be particularly relevant to adopters in HK.

A breathalyser test cutoff is the point at which most people are definitely drunk enough to be dangerous at the wheel.

But with this watch, it could provoke tendencies for the legal cutoff to become the limit to one’s drinking, since it confers confidence to be able to see the numbers. Whereas without it, risk aversion and the feeling of (impending) inebriation would usually have been a better indicator.

In short, some people may exceed the cutoff and still drive safely, but some could easily flip their car after barely approaching the legal limit. This watch could mislead drivers’ drinking behaviours, which could constitute a grave public health hazard.

But at least the price seems a good deterrent(or perhaps not?). :)
