Apple’s Hong Kong Store To Open This Summer at IFC Mall in Central
Has Apple picked Central as the location for their official store?

Since Apple released news that they would be opening 25 stores in China, with one in Hong Kong, the rumors have been running like crazy on where the new location will be.
Some are predicting Apple will try and get some premium space on Canton Road alongside all the luxury brands and flocks of tourists, some speculation we’ve heard takes them to Elements, but the one we’re most likely going with is the news that the official Apple Store will be located in Central at the IFC Mall – Genius Bar and all.
We saw a tweet by @AngieWong – a writer for Time Out Hong Kong and a great resource for gossip on the going ons of Hong Kong’s food scene – on Twitter that it was confirmed that Apple would be moving into IFC Mall in Central. We’re pegging it at this Summer as we have also been in contact with the current location’s tenant and that IFC was trying to relocate them to make way for the new Apple store.
Sorry, Steve this is not the same as losing the next gen iPhone but to Hong Kong Apple fans and iPhanatics this is the next best thing! Could it even be ready by late-July when the iPad is to launch in Hong Kong?
We think IFC Mall is a great location – near all the bankers who might now consider switching to Mac, near the Airport Express for all tourists and travellers and of course the convenience for visitors from Macau. Although we were hoping they were going to have a standalone store like the one in New York City and take over the Coach shop at the foot on Lan Kwai Fong, we’re thinking this is still the next best location.
How this affects the Central stores for the Ultimate Mac and PC Gallery next to the main Hang Seng Bank building? It should probably fuel even more business for them as spill-over is the best type of business.
Apple Hong Kong has neither confirmed nor denied this story when we approached them and that would “contact us when they were ready to do the announce something”
PS: Just in case: that story we ran about Steve Jobs coming to Hong Kong to help open the new store – have a look at the date it was published on again.

Can you confirm where exactly? Or is it too early to know the exact location.
I’m going to IFC to see if there are any empty spots there this weekend
Which space will the Apple store occupy? Who is the current tenant? I would really like to see a street-level building, but great locations are hard to find!
it would need to be decently sized…and I can’t imagine Apple taking a spot that doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic… Either 1st floor of IFC 2, or along the back of IFC 1 that is near the steps going to the courtyard and Exchange Square buildings.
I do agree that IFC is a good location, but it is hard to believe that Apple will one its first store within a mall. Although given the rental prices in HK may be Apple is taking a different strategy for HK. Especially given the number of existing authorized resellers.
I think Canton Road will be too expensive. A location where Apple can have the kind of entrance that the NYC Fifth Ave. store has, would be the current Sogo TST store.
I hope they don’t use the massive image of Steve Jobs face on the store front. Not that he’s an unattractive guy, but that would be some ego!

Great. Does that mean that iTunes will start offering more than just iPhone/iTouch applications in Hong Kong too?
Yes, the iTunes store will be offering iPad apps very soon to coincide with the iPad being launched here.
As for music, movies etc. that is another question.

Esprit in Mong Kok has closed.
For those who are not familiar, the location is a large corner area where Argyle St meets Nathan Rd.
It would be ideal for Apple. The walls are simply glass. Very visible and Apple could make it a tourist attraction. It is in the gadget area of Mong Kok.
