Our First iPhone 4 Review
Jeff Lyndon returns with his views on the new iPhone.
We’ve been eagerly awaiting the new iPhone 4 here at Neonpunch.com, but not crazy enough to buy one for the current Hong Kong street price of HK$11,000 for one!
Thankfully, our Apple correspondent Jeff Lyndon was smart enough to get one from one of the launch countries and brought it back to Hong Kong and to reveal to our readers what he thought of the magical new phone! Take it away, Jeff:
Since the 27th of June I have been using the iPhone 4.
Simply put my initial impression of the device is just jaw dropping. The metallic border with glass on both front and back gives a very solid, reliable and expansive feeling.
I was at WWDC 2010 in the main hall where Steve Job’s presented the Retina Display. Obviously where I sat I couldn’t fully appreciate what he said and have extremely high hope to see the actual display performance.
When I finally got one in my hands, initially I am not that impressed. After comparing with my iPhone 3GS I then realized the sharpness of the edges were unbelievably sharp. After a few days the difference isn’t that much, but like watching a bunch of Blu-ray movies you think all movies are this clear until you pop in a DVD. So much the same with the iPhone 4 after a fews day, I realize I am able to read much longer on this device, the screen makes reading much more pleasing and easier then previously.
I try the new game made by NG:MOCO called Eliminate GunRange which is the only game I know designed to use the Retina Display and the Gyrometer. It’s a pretty fun experience. The level of detail in the graphics and the sensitivity of the iPhone 4 control are so much better. The iPhone 4 is extremely fast and powerful device, all my games such as: Attack & Destroy, EdiMon and Anna Montana are performing at over 60 frames per second! Of all the phones I’ve used, this one is the snappiest phone I have ever held in my hand!
The camera is another thing I focused on. The result is unbelievable even under low light situations. The picture taken for the device is simply great, I definitely haven’t seen in ANY mobile phone the ability to produce such sharp, well lit and detailed images! On top, the camera app fires up extremely quickly, almost instantly, iPhone 3GS takes 2-3 times more time to fire up the camera compared to the iPhone 4.
Have a look at these photos I took – you can clearly see the amazing quality of the iPhone 4 when compared to the photo taken by the iPhone 3GS:
Battery wise, if you are comparing an iPhone 4 running iOS4 vs. iPhone 3GS running iOS3, then you will only find the iPhone4 probably runs 10-15% longer. If you compare both devices running on iOS4 then you probably will get the 40% increase Apple has mentioned.
To conclude should you buy iPhone 4? For iPhone users owning a 2G or 3G version, I think its a worthy upgrade since you get iOS4 and a new phone.
For iPhone 3GS users, I’d suggest you to wait for the “iPhone 4S.” And of course anyone who has yet to experience an iPhone at all – get ready for a major mobile experience, when it releases in Hong Kong later this month.

Thanks for the review. Can’t wait to get my hands on one, whenever that is hahaha
Looks like you have a case on yours – is that helping the reception for phone calls and for 3G data? Do you think that will be as big an issue in Hong Kong as it is in the US?
I’m using HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S. I was an Apple 3GS user but Android is really something cooler than the Apple OS. Well, I was a die-hard Apple fans but the development is relatively slower and less fun than the Android. Apple is good in marketing and design but in terms of expansion and forward development the Linux base Android is with massive potential to grow. And wouldn’t it be cool anymore to have everyone holding the same Apple phone on the street?
Nice to know that you are an user of the google phone os… But my question, is ot so political minded:
How this phone works trough Asian network ? Antenna problems… ? Better reception than the 3GS…
If its only a minor problem, I will buy ! I like Apple products, iApps are great, and developers rocks….
In term of using the same phone, it seems that no one now wants to use a bada, symbian, and win os !
It will be fun, later this year to see, if the development of different OS (winmob7), will make this competition, more interesting for the consumer perspective….
See ya, I love Neonpunch
