Wireless Charging System ‘Powermat’ Comes to Hong Kong
The days of tangled wires for your gadgets is now a thing of the past.
Powermat from the U.S. launches its line of wireless chargers in Hong Kong this month. You’ve probably seen this concept work for the Palm Pre, but basically you only have to plug in the Powermat and then rest your iPhone, Blackberry or Nintendo DS on the mat and they get charged electromagnetically.
They’ve sold over 750,000 Powermat’s in the first two months of availability in the US, and now its available in Hong Kong for HK$998 for the desktop or portable versions and HK$298 for each device receiver and it currently supports iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry Bold, Curve and Pearl and a range of Nintendo DS’s. If you are a neat freak and want to ditch all those wires then this might be an investment you’re willing to make. This video explains it quite simply:
The Powermat wireless charging system pairs an ultra-thin mat with a sleek receiver that attaches to each electronic device. The system utilizes principles of magnetic induction, supercharged by POWERMAT proprietary technology, to deliver the speed and intelligence consumers expect. Energy is transferred quickly and efficiently via a shared magnetic field from a circuit inside the charging mat to a receiving circuit that is either embedded in or attached to the paired electronic device. The intelligent system also initiates an “electronic conversation” between the mat and devices placed on the Powermat surface to ensure the optimum level of power is sent, and includes an auto-termination feature, which stops charging a device once it is fully charged to not only save energy but also protect the device.
Once electronics devices are equipped with a Powermat receiver, users can simply place their devices on the surface of the mat to charge or drop and charge without the need to search for the right charger or fumble with the device’s plug. A magnetic attraction between the receiver and each access point on the mat assures that alignment is precise and the most efficient charging will occur. Light and sound indicators, featuring the unique Powermat sound, also let users know that charging is active.
To satisfy the needs of different users, Powermat is offering two mat versions for the initial launch, the Powermat Home & Office mat and the Powermat Portable, both of which have three “access points” each, allowing wireless charging of up to 3 electronic devices simultaneously. There is one extra USB power port at the side of the Mat. With only one power source and one Mat, 4 devices can be charged at the same time. Consumers will no longer need to search for multiple power outlets when they want to charge several devices at the same time.
Customers can now pre-order Powermat products online. Please visit www.wirelesscharging.hk. Any customer who pre-orders for Powermat products will be entitled to get one set# of USB Reading Light.
We’ll be getting a demo unit of the Powermat and will get back with a full review.
