Get Ready for Flipper Discs: DVD On One Side, Blu-ray On the Other
| January 19, 2010 |
For those who can’t decide if they want to watch in SD or HD.

This may be the weirdest combo ever created, but Universal Studios Home Entertainment is going to start releasing their moves on discs that have a DVD version of their movie on one side, and a Blu-ray version on the other.
If you have a Blu-ray player, we can’t imagine you’d ever want to see a standard-def movie ever again. We’re guessing it’s for people who have yet to buy a Blu-ray, and is getting them ready so that when they do upgrade, they won’t have to buy all their movies all over again. When you see this kind of product coming out, it must mean that Blu-rays need more of a push past the limited early adopter market.
An industry first, the new “flipper” discs will launch on January 19, 2010 with the blockbuster superspy thrillers The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, premiering as individually packaged Blu-ray discs.
Each side of Universal’s flipper discs includes the entire movie as well as all available bonus features, with the Blu-ray side featuring exciting BD exclusives such as U-Control and BD-Live.
Read more about what is on the disc and Universal’s roll-out plans.
But basically, if you haven’t switched to Blu-ray completely yet, then we’d start praying to Santa that he’ll be bringing you one!:

As you may know, I used to work for WB. About 3 or 4 years ago, WB announced a plan to put out HD discs with the BR on one side and the HD-DVD on the other – basically just gluing two discs together. This was a plan devised by marketing and the product never actually reached stores because the defect rate was too high. I guess a few years down the line, they’ve worked out some of the kinks. But personally I don’t see the point or the appeal of this product.
I say just buy a Blu-ray player and be done with it. Go PS3 then you can play games based on the movies you are watching!
