How many zombie games on the iPhone does this make?

What game simultaneously sparked delight amongst fanboys and resurrected an aging franchise? If you guessed Resident Evil 4 you would be correct! And now it is available for the iPhone! It was first released on July 14th but then pulled the same day and then re-released on the 29th. Zombies in the machine? Or something more dire from the Umbrella Corporation.

For US$7.99/HK$64 at the iTunes App Store and resting at 37.3MB we think it’s a bargain. The game received amazing scores across the board, getting above 90 at Metacritic on every console platform and it was a major change in the RE franchise. The best thing about this terrific app is that it’s not watered down. It fully uses the iPhone hardware, creating the 3D graphics and creepy zombies that scared us the first time around! On top of the story campaign, it also has a mercenary mode.

The control scheme is an on-screen analog stick which initially worried us. Traditionally these things have been a bit sluggish but looking at the in-game play footage, it looks spot-on.

Even though this game was released 4 years ago we still consider it classic and sublime enough for you to start cruising through when you’re bored on your iPhone. Take a look at the play footage below and see what you think!

For something a bit less time-intensive in the zombie genre, check out Kids Vs. Zombies for wave after wave of brain-eaters.

A trio of reviews are below:

Doom Resurrection, another first-person-shooter classic that recently made its iPhone debut, RE4 doesn’t keep you on rails: You get to roam free in every burned-out town and gloomy graveyard. Thus, it feels much more immersive, and much more like the original.”

“The graphics in Resident Evil 4 are very nice, with almost no frame rate issues. While not exactly comparable to the original versions, they still make the creepy, undead atmosphere more realistic. The sound quality is nothing special, but the moaning and shuffling of the zombies sound great, overall just what you’d expect from a cell phone port.”
- gamersyndrome

“We know that a total conversion of Resident Evil 4 is impossible, but nothing less than a faithful distillation of that great game will do…Fortunately, that’s exactly what Capcom has achieved.”
