Tuesday. 23 February. 2010. 10:02 am

The most out-of-control zombie movie comes to eat your BD player.

Hallowe’en comes early this year, as one of the craziest nazi zombie movies ever made is available on Blu-ray today: Dead Snow.

As far as zombie movies go we’re going to put this one high up on the list of all time greats like Shaun of the Dead and Army of Darkness because it’s so over the top and insane! You can see the 66% fresh rating at RottenTomatoes or the 61% on MetaCritic, but basically you’ll know if you need to buy it from this clip below:

Yes, good morning Hong Kong!

See the disc specs here. Dead Snow is on Blu-ray today at HMV and other fine Blu-ray stores in Hong Kong.

Chrissie Chau Gives an ‘Eyescream Fiesta’ Gift to Hong Kong

Monday. 4 January. 2010. 11:40 am

Spend the cold Hong Kong winter nights with bikini clad Chrissie Chau.

There are only a few things that gets Neonpunch hot and bothered, and one of them is the bodacious Chrissie Chau!

The sexy Hong Kong model who has catapulted to the celebrity A-List, and can be frequently seen in numerous ad campaigns, was one of the main highlights at this year’s Asian Game Show X Online Game Show.

Chrissie could be seen on the first and second day of the AGS X OGS (24th and 25th December) promoting her new Blu-Ray swimsuit video “Eyescream Fiesta” and “ColouRevolution 2010” calendar. Hardcore fans who bought the video and calendar were able to queue up to get Chrissie’s autograph, while other ecstatic fans crowded the stage with their cameras ready to get a snapshot of their goddess.

Get Ready for Flipper Discs: DVD On One Side, Blu-ray On the Other

Wednesday. 2 December. 2009. 10:01 am
January 19, 2010

For those who can’t decide if they want to watch in SD or HD.

bourne_flipper_discs

This may be the weirdest combo ever created, but Universal Studios Home Entertainment is going to start releasing their moves on discs that have a DVD version of their movie on one side, and a Blu-ray version on the other.

If you have a Blu-ray player, we can’t imagine you’d ever want to see a standard-def movie ever again. We’re guessing it’s for people who have yet to buy a Blu-ray, and is getting them ready so that when they do upgrade, they won’t have to buy all their movies all over again. When you see this kind of product coming out, it must mean that Blu-rays need more of a push past the limited early adopter market.

An industry first, the new “flipper” discs will launch on January 19, 2010 with the blockbuster superspy thrillers The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, premiering as individually packaged Blu-ray discs.

New Star Trek Film Comes to Blu-ray and DVD on November 17

Thursday. 23 July. 2009. 9:59 am

The new film beams to Blu-ray with lots of extras.

The Summer isn’t even over yet and the release dates for the movies on home video are starting to come in. If you enjoyed the new J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie that made US$375 worldwide and starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock then you’re in for a treat on November 17th, and we don’t mean just the discs:

With the packaging feature dubbed “augmented reality,” consumers will be able to hold their disc packaging in front of any standard webcam to unlock an interactive hologram on the computer screen, through which they can tour five cabins on the Enterprise, even shooting enemies from the ship’s deck.

Users will have to log in to a website to access the feature, but they control the hologram by holding the disc packaging.

That sounds like more of the stuff we posted about here. Some of the special feature videos include:

  • To Boldly Go: Taking on the world’s most beloved science fiction franchise was no small mission. Director J.J. Abrams, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, producer Damon Lindelof, and executive producer Bryan Burk talk about the many challenges they faced and their strategy for success.
  • Casting: The producers knew their greatest task was finding the right cast to reprise these epic roles. The cast, for their part, talk about the experience of trying to capture the essence of these mythic characters. The piece concludes with a moving tribute to Leonard Nimoy.
  • Aliens: Designers Neville Page and Joel Harlow talk about the hurdles they faced creating new alien species, recreating the Romulans and Vulcans, and designing the terrifying creatures on Delta Vega for the new Star Trek.

More details on the special features for both the DVD and Blu-ray are here. Time.com asks J.J. 10 Questions below:

Blu-ray Disc Sales on the Rise, Up 90% in First Half of 2009

Wednesday. 22 July. 2009. 9:18 am

Sales of Blu-ray discs rose to US$407 million so far this year.

bluraydisc

It must be the lower price of Blu-ray players and everyone switching to HD TV’s because it isn’t because of bigger Playstation 3 sales. Nearly 20 million discs have shipped in Q2 alone, says Electronic House:

Blu-ray hardware sales surpassed two million units in the first half, marking nearly 25 percent growth over the same period from 2008. According to DEG, there are nearly 11 million Blu-ray devices in homes in the U.S., including PlayStation 3 consoles. Nearly 75 percent of those units are BD-Live compatible.

Putting that in to perspective is that 5 million DVD players were sold in Q2 of 2009 as well, brining the number of DVD players since it came to market in 2007 to 260 million in the US alone. So it seems the DVD had a lifespan of 10 years. That means with the progression of technology the Blu-ray may not even be the format of choice in 2018.

Watchmen Blu-Ray on July 27th, Watch with Your Facebook Friends

Friday. 15 May. 2009. 9:39 am
July 27, 2009

We’re going to watch the Watchmen in HD, baby!

watchmenbluray

Three versions of the Watchmen are coming for home video. Regular single-disc DVD, deluxe 2-disc DVD and the mother of it all the deluxe 2-disc Blu-ray. And then in a new marketing twist, Dr. Manhattan will be on Facebook with you:

In an industry first, Warner Home Video is set to announce a plan to sync up “friend” networks on Facebook with the interactive community-screening features of Warners’ Blu-ray Disc releases, starting with the release of “Watchmen Director’s Cut.”

The studio partnership with the social network Web site will use the BD-Live interactive feature on high-def discs, allowing “Watchmen” purchasers to view the film simultaneously and share comments with their Facebook friends.

BD-Live has always allowed such “community screenings” via its “buddy list” function. But those lists now can be synched with Facebook’s friend networks for immediate access to a broad network of acquaintances.

The 2-Disc version is the 3 hour version Director’s Cut with 25 more minutes of footage! But before you rush out to pre-order it, it seems like there will be an “Ultimate Cut” that will incorporate the Black Freighter animation that was sold seperately pushing the runtime of Watchmen to 3 1/2 hours. ICV2 says this version may come out as early as this Fall, but most likely in time for Christmas shoppers.
