Some reasons to buy the DVD’s rather than the “China Specials”

futurama1

With the announcement of this Futurama DVD box set collecting all the TV episodes and movies in this awesome Bender head box we thought we’d spotlight some of the cooler DVD box set packaging that we’ve seen in the past year. Being in Hong Kong, we all have an easy opportunity to pick up the Chinese pirated discs in the city or a jump over the border, but these fancy packages make the DVD become more than just a disc you watch and toss but a collectible piece of Pop Culture and that’s what we’re all about here at Neonpunch.com:

1. Futurama: The Complete Collection 1999-2009

As mentioned this Bender-head box collects the last decade worth of Futurama stuff. It’s coming out soon to help hype up the NEW Futurama series coming out soon, but this bad boy is going to se you back US$200/HK$1600 if you go direct to HMV Hong Kong or you can order from Amazon here and get 40% off.

2. Watchmen Blu-ray Director’s Cut (Amazon Exclusive Nite Owl Ship)

May 19, 2009

No need to wait for it to hit Hong Kong TV, you can get it in 1 month.

24_7_bluray

Coming out hot on the heels of its broadcast season finale, is the complete 24 Season 7 on DVD and Blu-ray on May 19th. Interesting to see since the U.S., just had episode 19 air this week. I guess even 20th Century Fox knows how in demand Jack Bauer is around the world and why wait for local stations to air it when you can get it in so many different places these days.

While not as good as the first 5 seasons, 24 Season 7 is a huge step up from the terrible Season 6. This season we see Jack Bauer in Washington, D.C, and re-united with a dead friend stopping all kinds of new foreign and domestic terrorists. If you’re a fan, you’ll love it, if you have yet to have a “Jack Attack” then what are you waiting for?

The DVD (US$49.98) and Blu-ray (US$69.99) releases of 24: Season 7 which stars Kiefer Sutherland. Each will be available to own from the 19th May. Extras will include audio commentaries on 12 of the episodes, deleted scenes with optional commentary by co-executive Producer Stephen Kronish and Producer Paul Gadd, and featurettes (“24’s Villians”, “The Ambush”, “The Fumicite Festival Presents the Music of 24″)

While May 19th is the US street date, in Hong Kong we may just see it sooner!

Halloween Movie Countdown: The Grudge

Thursday. 30 October. 2008. 10:37 am

The final Hallowe’en Movie you must see!

thegrudge.jpg

We close our look at modern horror movies with this freak-out from Japan: The Grudge (Ju-On). We remember seeing the trailer in the JP Cinema in Causeway Bay and the entire audience made more noise after those 2 minutes than the main feature (Matrix Revolutions) and while its not the best horror movie ever made, like The Ring, it will give you chills and thrills and images in your mind you won’t forget easily. We haven’t seen the U.S. version with Sarah Michelle Geller, but this Japanese one has enough scary moments to keep you on the edge of your seats. The spider girl and the creepy little kid looking up from the edge of your bed – are freakier than any Freddy Krueger or Jason.

See the trailer here:

Today we hope you are all dressed up and ready to have a creepy and spooky evening in Hong Kong.

HAPPY HALLOWE’EN EVERYONE! See you in November!

Halloween Movie Countdown: Planet Terror

Halloween Movie Countdown Part 1.

planetterror.jpg

As we run up to Hallowe’en next Wednesday, and seeing as its our favorite time of year, we decided to post a scary movie a day to get everyone into the mood. These are movies that have come out over the past few years, since we’re sure you’ve all seen The Omen and The Shining so we’ll leave things pre-2000 off this little list.

Today’s pick is a movie from this year called Planet Terror. It was the Robert Rodriguez half of Grindhouse – a tribute to B-movie exploitation film he made in conjunction with Quentin Tarantino. Super crazy, over-the-top plot, lots of hypodermic needles, kids with guns, flesh-hungry zombies, bad acting, gross special effects and a stripper/stand-up comedian who loses her leg and has it replaced with a machine gun to help her mow down bloodthirsty zombies. There is some kind of weird gas in the air turning people into disgusting blimp-like monster zombies. This film is actually more disgusting than it is scary but we thought we’d ease you into the really scary ones, and a nice and gross cameo by Bruce Willis. We’re usually pretty desensitized by seeing bloody gore on screen but even this one had us watching through our fingers – especially the castration scenes. Ouch!

Planet Terror’s official line is “A fun zombie film that busts at the seams with gross special effects, amazing action, and deliciously over-the-top moments, as gun-legged Cherry Darling (rose McGowan) and one man wrecking crew El Wray try to save the world from a horde of flesh-eating zombies” if that doesn’t get you down to the DVD shop, nothing will.

Part 2 of our Hallowe’en Movie Countdown tomorrow, until then watch 10 minutes of Planet Terror below:
