We don’t need to tell you who Eric Schmidt or Jack Ma is – so we’ll just tell you to set your alarm clocks to these times in Hong Kong if you want to see them live at the All Things D conference happening in the US and to get a sample of what’s heading our way in October!

For the first time, a few of the conversations between elite guests and hosts Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg will be made available for viewers around the world through live streaming:

  • Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, on Wednesday, June 1 at 9:15 am Hong Kong time. He’ll also be demonstrating Google’s new mobile payment offering.
  • Alibaba Group Founder and CEO Jack Ma, on Thursday, June 2 at 7:30 am Hong Kong time.

Google contracted The Boston Consulting Group to reveal the impact the internet has on Hong Kong’s economy – and what might be a surprise to some, surely not to readers of Neonpunch – its massive!

The report estimates that the Internet contributed HK$96 billion in 2009, representing 5.9 percent of Hong Kong’s GDP. A share that is likely to grow by 7 percent annually; contributing 7.2 percent of GDP in 2015 – faster than the forecasted GDP growth of 4 percent, reaching HK$146 billion by 2015.

Here’s a fun fact: Cantonese is the third most popular Chinese dialect for voice search after China Mandarin and Taiwanese Mandarin.

In a nutshell, Google launched a Cantonese Voice Search in Hong Kong and the feature will be available for all Android 2.2 and iPhone users.

The funniest thing about this is that as you’ll read below, it really is tailored for Hong Kong Cantonese – meaning Google has made special point to figure out the English words that Hong Kong people slide into sentences, transliteration, tones, noisy environments and the best thing to our readers who may have Cantonese as a second language (like us) – ACCENTS!
