Will a virtual unknown be the first out of the gate in the tablet race?

Webstation

Promises, promises, promises. We’ve all heard the gossip, rumours, chatter and whispers that Apple and Microsoft are each developing a touch screen tablet, but when it will be confirmed no-one knows.

However, a company called Camangi recently announced that the portable 7-inch touch screen tablet that they are developing is ready and will be available as soon as early next month, just in time for the gift-buying season.

Called the Webstation, the device uses the Android 1.5 operating system running on a Marvell 624MHz PXA303 processor. Camangi’s device sports a 7-Inch (800×480) glass touch screen display with built-in Wi-Fi (b/g), GPS, microSD slot, 2MP camera, 0.3MP webcam and a USB port.

The device can play videos and music, be used as a e-book reader, browse photos, surf the net and check your Gmail account. The Webstation also has a built-in stand that allows for easier viewing of movies, photo slideshows and even doubles as a digital picture frame.

According to Camangi, the re-chargeable battery has four to five hours of usage depending on what tasks you are performing. The WebStation will be available early next month for US$399.

However, if you find the 7 inch screen a little on the big side and want something a little bit smaller, you should check out the Archos 5 Internet Tablet that has a 4.8 inch display and also runs on the Android OS as well.

In other tablet news, Wired magazine is so confident that Apple is bringing their tablet out soon that they are already working on how their magazine would be displayed on it. 1. Nice. But I’ll wait for the Apple tablet no matter what it cost.
